Gang rape, brutal murder… which often occurs in our India. PROTECT OUR GIRL CHILDREN. The usual knee jerk reactions- protests and demonstrations, online petitions, candle marches-all demanding that the accused be hanged. Yes, they deserve death. But, what about the victim? Can she be brought back, can the crime be undone. Will the death penalty stop rapes? No…the rot runs deeper.
A system that deals with rape cases expeditiously from arrest till the execution of sentence and no one is spared. The message should go out loud and clear that ‘no one is above the law’. We need to prevent rapes from happening. Prevention and not punishment is the solution and that requires concerted efforts on part of all the stakeholders.
