Gamusa hanging décor

Gamusa is a symbol of hospitality, friendship, and respect.  We have tried recreating it as a wall hanging using Fevicryl Fabric Colours.

Materials Needed

Fevicryl Fabric Colours Burnt Sienna 201, Black 202, Crimson 204, Maroon 214, White 227, Coral Red 266, Fine Art Brushes, Casement Fabric, A4 White Paper, Yellow Carbon Paper, Pencil, Colourful Wooden Beads, Needle & Thread, Scissors, Wooden Ruler (2” X 15”)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Take the casement fabric, mark and cut the fabric pieces measuring 5 ½” x 5 ½”, few rectangles of 10” x 6 ½”, 8” x 5 ½”, 5” x 5 ½”, 7 ½” x 5” and 7 ½” x 5 ½” in size.
  • We are going to make the traditional Gamusa pattern on the pieces of casement fabric to make a wall hanging.

  • Take a4 white paper, Draw few Gamusa motifs from the traditional weaved fabric of Assam in each square and rectangle.
  • Trace the Gamusa patterns on the casement fabric pieces with yellow carbon paper.
  • Paint the motifs by following the actual Gamusa patterns using Fabric Colours Burnt Sienna 201, Crimson 204, Maroon 214, White 227 and Coral Red 266.
  • Leave it to dry completely.

  • Take the painted casement fabric pieces; attach them to each other with a strand of the colourful wooden beads using needle and thread.

  • Take a 15” X 1 ½” Wooden Plank, attach and arrange the painted Gamusa pattern fabric pieces aesthetically with golden tassels towards the ends with Needle and thread.
